I started interning with Polaris Bikewear in November 2014, after completing a live brief with them in my final year of university for the Polaris Pedalers Inn project to celebrate the Grand Depart.
After finishing my degree in Graphic Arts & Design I was eager to leave the university bubble behind and set out in my design career.
Polaris offered me a company setting where I was given the opportunity to design alongside a variety of people and observe how their roles all interlinked with one another. Working with product designers, garment technologists, plus the sales and marketing team, there was certainly no boring intern photocopying to be done!
Having access to a small reprographics room enabled me to build upon my knowledge of digital printing, and most importantly see the design process through from initial idea to finished printed article. I was given responsibility for designing and producing banners, instore POS, posters and vinyls, as well as creating graphics for garments, online banners and product packaging – It’s safe to say I was never left twiddling my thumbs!
My interning experience at Polaris has given me confidence in my creative ability and exposed me to a range of situations where I have been able to improve my design skill set and knowledge. I’ve developed more of an understanding of design in industry and the challenges brands face in a constantly evolving market place.
I am thankful to Roger, Linda and the rest of the team at Polaris for supporting me in the starting stages of my design career.
