Sport Relief 2016 – Polaris Bike Pod Racing Gold Cup

To support Sports Relief this year and in celebration of the Cheltenham Festival Polaris Bikewear introduced  the fast and furious sport of Bike Pod Racing (Bike Cases). Jockeys and Horses (Pods) had been deep in months of rigorous training for this event and it all now came down to a cold Friday morning on Gold Cup day in March as to who came out victorious.

The format for racing was 3 heats and 1 final with the first two from each heat qualifying to make a 6 Horse finale.

The first race on the card was the Polaris Spring Challenge Colts Stakes. With one Non Runner out early on in the week this left a competitive 3 Horse field. Sales manager Barry “Dettori”  Parker took an early lead aboard Sea Pigeon striding out to win by around 3 lengths comfortably to qualify for the final. This left 2nd place to be closely contested on the run in and eventually was won by a short head by Monksfield – James “Fehily” Barker.

Director Linda “Scudamore” Dillon took an early lead in the first few furlongs with Master Minded but then struggled as her mount faded as he hit the front. There was a strong chase from the rest of the field as One Man ridden by Karen “Hill” Berridge and Red Rum piolted by Hannah “Dunwoody” Freudenberg made their bids for victory. In the final few furlongs Red Rum wore down the field to take the victory convincingly in the end and progress through to the final with One Man. The fillies race was eventful with Flying Bolt proving spirited for Chantelle “McCoy” Matthews who unseated on the home straight.

The start was a very competitive affair in the second running with Smad Place ridden by Steve Twiston-Davies” Gregory enjoying the out front running as usual but he was closely followed in the running by the legendary  Best Mate piloted on this occasion by Andy “Aspell” Beach.  Behind the leading pair it ws a close run race between Don Cossack – Roger “Francome” Dillon and Dodging Bullets – John “Fitzgerald” Billsborrow.
